(Coastal)+ Navigation skills to Day-skipper Level. VHF/SRC Cert. + First Aid Cert.
are recommended.

Course Aim: To teach the
powerboating to the standard required to enable participants to
undertake short coastal passages by day.
Course Content: As well as
a recap of Level 2 skills, candidates will receive further instruction
to develop their boathandling and navigation skills and will
be taught the importance and use of the following:
- Basic pilotage and passage
pre-planning, encompassing the use of charts, navigation
instruments, how to read tidal charts/info, use of bearings
and waypoints, position fixing while at sea, the principals and use
of electronic navigation aids i.e. GPS and the use of XTE, SOG, COG,
BTW, DTW, and how to deal with possibly having to return at night,
- Recognition of, and ability to
implement the IRPCS (anti-collision regulations)
- Sources of weather forecasts
and their interpretation in practical terms,
- Preparation of the boat for
longer passages at sea and understanding the minimum equipment that
should be carried,
- Increased level of boathandling
skills e.g. crossing tidal streams, mooring alongside, turning
using warps all in rougher conditions,
- Further techniques for picking up a
Man-over-Board in different conditions
