RYA Powerboat Level I

Duration: One Day
Previous Experience: None Required
Minimum Age: 12, 12 to 16 year olds will
receive a Level 1 certificate endorsed "The holder should only use
powered craft under the supervision of a responsible adult"
Course Aim: Designed for those who would
like a basic introduction to powerboating. No experience is required as
this course is geared to provide the participants with the basic skills
required to enjoy powerboating with safety and progressive skills
development in mind.
Course Content: In quite a full day you
will cover all aspects concerned with taking a powerboat out onto the
water. We will be discussing;
- Your personal safety
and equipment,
- Safety equipment for the boat,
- Launch
and recovery methods,
- Your responsibilities to others
on the water,
- Types of craft available,
- the Rules of the Road( the highway code for boats).
Naturally, a great deal of the time will be "on-the-water" learning and
practicing the important boat handling skills needed to be safe on the
water. These skills include;
- Starting and stopping the engine,
- Slow speed and Higher
speed manoeuvres
- Moving off
from pontoons or piers,
- Approaching mooring buoys
and pontoons and piers,
- Anchoring
(in shallow water),
- and other basic skills like
knot tying( we don't want the boat
slipping away while we're having lunch do we?).
