RYA Powerboat Level II
(National Powerboat Certificate)

Previous Experience: None Required
Minimum Age: 12, 12 to 16 year olds will
receive a Level 2 certificate endorsed "The holder should only use
powered craft under the supervision of a responsible adult"
Course Aim: To provide the skills and
background knowledge needed to be a competent powerboat driver in either
displacement or planing craft, your certificate will be endorsed
to show which type(s) of boat in which the training and assessment took
place. Recognised as the most popular certificate course, this
course provides the basis for continued skills development in
Powerboating.
Upon gaining this award holders can also apply to
the RYA for their ICC which many EU countries require a skipper to hold
before using a powerboat in their waters (see ICC page for details).
Course Content: The Level 2 course covers
all Level 1 topics and skills and goes on to give more on the water
instruction through demonstration and practice on the following topics
during the two days:
- Slow speed manoeuvres such as; leaving and
coming alongside, approaching and tying up to mooring buoys,
anchoring, standing off (stemming the tide), three point turns
- High speed manoeuvres including S-turns,
U-turns, Figure 8's, coming on to the plane
- The effects of wind and tide on the boat,
and how to counter it
- Man-over-board drills and procedures
- The use of charts and GPS units
- Seamanship skills and basic knot tying
- Types of craft and hull forms (to allow you
to make an informed choice of vessel if considering a purchase)
Successful candidates will be awarded
the National Powerboat Certificate Level 2, which will be endorsed to
show which style of vessel the training was carried out in. Our training
takes place on Coastal Waters and your certificate will be endorsed to
that effect.
