RYA Advanced (Day and Night Cruising)

Previous Experience: At least PB
II (coastal) with a broad range of experience (at least 2 seasons) in planing vessels and
Navigation skills and knowledge to RYA Day Skipper
Level, tho' the RYA Intermediate Cert. is recommended.
You
must also hold the VHF/SRC and First Aid Cert.
Minimum Age: 17 years
Course Aim: To
equip both the serious amateur and the professional skipper with the
skills needed to safely operate a powerboat by day and/or night in
familiar tidal waters on longer coastal passages. 
Course Content: Whilst there will be some instruction time
on this course (roughly 40% of the time available) this is primarily an
assessment of your already acquired navigation skills. You will
therefore be expected to be a very competent Powerboater able to
prepare, navigate and handle the boat in most conditions. You should be
able to demonstrate, with your fellow candidates as crew, your
boathandling skills and your understanding of the following;
- Preparing the boat for sea,
including engine and fuel checks
- Your responsibilities as Skipper
- Ability to prepare and carry out
pilotage and passage plans
- Ability to apply the IRPCS
(anti-collision regs)
- Be able to navigate at sea using
traditional and electronic methods
- To safely take charge of a
powerboat and crew at sea, both by day and night
- Be able to interpret a
weather-forecast synoptic chart
Your Instructor will be
able to answer any questions, and give further guidance should it be required.
Further instruction will also be given
in topics such as ;
- Rough Weather handling
- Fire prevention and fighting
- Action to be taken in various
emergencies, e.g. hull damage, medical situations, engine
failure
- Towing and being towed
- Use of flares
- Helicopter rescue procedures
- Rough weather Man-over-Board
recovery and search and rescue patterns
